Mycorrhizae is the term that defines the relationship of symbiosis, that is, of mutual benefit, between a fungus and a plant. And in this article we are going to tell you how they help you increase the yield of your crops.
We start. The soil is a living habitat that hosts a multitude of organisms. These organisms can be of various types and sizes. There are those that we perceive with the naked eye (worms, insects, etc.) and those that are so small that we cannot even see them -microorganisms- (fungi, bacteria, etc.). Do you know that with proper management of these microorganisms you can achieve more productivity in your crops, larger fruits and better quality?
Mycorrhizae, what are they and what are their benefits for plants? The term mycorrhiza refers to symbiotic associations between fungi and plant roots. Because they are important? Because fungi are capable of transforming soil minerals and decomposing materials into forms that can be assimilated by plant roots, thus contributing to their nutrition and development. In exchange, plants, through their roots, secrete sugars, amino acids, fatty acids and other organic substances that fungi need to live and multiply.
In this way, plants improve the absorption of nutrients, some essential for their development, such as phosphorus and nitrogen. They also improve water absorption and resistance to water stress conditions and saline soils, for example.
The presence of mycorrhizal fungi also improves the defense of plants against pathogenic organisms and improves soil structure, thanks to their networks of hyphae and filaments.
Mycorrhizae and their biostimulant and biofertilizer effectsIn recent years, much of the research on soil microbiology has focused on microorganisms and their beneficial effects on plants. Efforts are focused on promoting the existence of mycorrhizae with the aim of guaranteeing adequate plant growth, and doing so in a sustainable way. At Symborg, for example, we have been betting on mycorrhizal fungi for a decade. After years of research we have managed to isolate the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum, which we have used to formulate our biostimulants: MycoUp and MycoUp 360, for irrigation systems, Resid MG, microgranulate for direct application at the time of planting, and Resid HC, for the seed treatment.
With them, we have managed to stimulate the growth of the root system of plants, which improves the efficiency in the absorption of water and nutrients, thus achieving greater production, greater quality and fruit size. and better physical and chemical soil properties.
Take a look at these results:
With the application of MycoUp, for example, in grapes of the Crimson variety, production has increased by up to 59% and the weight of the bunch, the firmness of the berry and the index of fruit have notably improved. maturity. In the Airén variety, we have obtained 14% more grapes. The increase in production has been 30% in first-year vines.
In crops such as melon and corn, we have managed to increase productivity by more than 20%. In potatoes, in the “universa” variety, the increase in production was 13% and 19% in the “soprano” variety. In tomato for industry, crops treated based on microorganisms have increased their productivity by more than 10%. In the case of pepper and lettuce, in percentages greater than 15%.
In peach crops, variety “catherine”, we have verified an average increase in production of 8.4 (kg/tree). In Paraguayan, between 6.5% and 19.3%. In the cultivation of apple trees, an increase in production of 15.9% has also been obtained.
As our CEO, Jesús Juárez, says, “Symborg was born with the aim of transforming agriculture and helping farmers to combine profitability and sustainability. With our innovative biotechnological solutions, we want to be that bridge between the agricultural model that is beginning to demand urgent changes and the model that is yet to come.” Will you join our challenge?
