Microorganisms to improve productivity in corn crops

Revolutionize corn production in terms of productivity and grain quality in a sustainable way.

Corn is one of the world’s most important crops, and its production extends all over the world. The global corn market is very extensive, since it is used in various sectors as food for people or animals, for the production of biofuels and in the chemistry industry.

When it comes to progressing towards more profitable and sustainable corn crops, corn has a great ally: microorganism biotechnology, a science that has revolutionized corn production in terms of productivity and grain quality in a sustainable way. Do you want to know how? Keep reading.

The current context

It is estimated that there are about 200 million hectares dedicated to corn crops worldwide. Latin America is the region with the most corn-growing area, followed by Asia and Africa, and the largest corn producers are the United States, China, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, with over 70% of the world’s corn production.

The corn industry has not stopped innovating in recent years and has positioned itself as a crop of key importance from a world production point of view.

In addition, this crop’s ability to uptake and store CO2 is essential, turning it into a key crop in the fight against climate change.

However, corn producers are not immune to the challenges faced by today’s agricultural growers: the effects of climate change, price volatility and market tensions are just some of those challenges. Do you want to know what we can do about this?

In this scenario, what solutions or alternatives do we have?

Innovation has put within the producers' reach exciting solutions to overcome current challenges and even increase the profitability of farms. Growers are already adopting sustainable agricultural practices, but at Symborg we go one step further and offer growers an additional solution: biotechnology.

With biological solutions developed from microorganisms and biomolecules, we help guarantee the productivity and profitability of harvests in a sustainable way that respects the environment. The data speaks for itself. Thanks to microorganism biotechnology, at Symborg we have managed to increase production in corn crops, both irrigated and non-irrigated, between 8.5% and 15.5%. In addition, we have achieved increases of 2 to 23 percentage points in specific weight, a cleaner grain and better emergence. Interesting, right?

How have we managed this? Thanks to the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum, the bases of several of our biostimulants. This fungus, unique and patented by Symborg, establishes a long-lasting symbiotic relationship in which the fungus exchanges water and nutrients with the plant through the exchange of sugars derived from photosynthesis.

This leads to an increase in the root system of the crop and the activation of key metabolic processes such as photosynthesis itself. In addition, mycorrhizal symbiosis allows crops to increase CO2 uptake and make more efficient use of water (WUE) and nutrients (NUE). All of this leads to an increase in the plant’s productive potential.

IMPROVE YOUR CORN CROP WITH THE USE OF MICROORGANISMS

Below, we present two essential biological solutions to increase corn crop productivity.

From the already mentioned mycorrhizal fungus Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum, we have formulated the biostimulants Resid MG and Resid HC.

Resid MG has been especially developed for cereals, and has a microgranulated concentrated formulation with a grain diameter of 1 mm.

Meanwhile, Resid HC has been developed for the treatment of cereal seeds and grain crops.

But besides these two solutions, we count also on a biofertilizer especially indicated for corn, which is VitaSoil. This is a biofertilizer for regeneration of poor soils that introduces a population of specifically selected microorganisms, avoiding soil degradation, fixing N and making blocked nutrients in the soil available to the plant.

Make the most of all the advantages microorganism biotechnology offers your crops, while respecting environmental requirements and without compromising your finances. At Symborg, we believe in another way of doing agriculture. Do you?
